Bigger Than Jesus (Happy Easter)

So I decided to finally start up one of these, even though I am massively computer illiterate. I'm hoping to have at least daily content up, and more than just handing over tons of free music- hopefully the writing ABOUT the free music will be interesting too. But we'll see.

This blog isn't going to be dedicated to just one type of music, although there will be a lot of hip-hop as it is my favorite genre- there's also going to be lots in the way of rock. I don't think there's going to be a whole lot of crossover between people who come here for Sonic Youth, Red Sparowes or Melvins stuff and those who are here for Pete Rock, J Dilla, etc, but ideally this blog (I really hate that term but there's not anything else that fits...) will be getting people into music they wouldn't think they'd like at first.

I will be upping everything through Sharebee (http://www.sharebee.com); I used to use SendSpace til I realized that SendSpace takes files down very quickly. I try to stay away from RapidShare as much as I can because as anyone who has used it will tell you, RapidShare fucking sucks.

So for the first post I figured I'd throw out my current favorite producer, someone who is very similar to Madlib (he was a member of Lootpack in the 90s and is out of the same Oxnard, CA scene): Kankick. The problem is, while Madlib is really well known and most of his stuff is readily available to anyone who wants to find it (legally or illegally), Kankick is on a tiny label with almost no distribution. Despite this, I'd go as far to say that 'Kick's instrumental stuff is right on par with the very best of Madlib's; if you enjoyed Champion Sound, Madvillainy or especially Beat Konducta: Movie Sounds v. 1 & 2 this is right up your alley. This is an almost complete discography; I don't have From Artz Unknown but when I find it I will up it.

This is not entirely instrumental, and I know people love to knock the Oxnard MCs (and Dilla too for that matter) for not being good on the mic, but I think the guest spots here are perfectly fine. This was Kankick's first solo album and should give you a good idea of what to expect from the rest of his beats. Very chilled out.

As the tracklist would indicate, this is a compilation of Kan's work over the years, entirely instrumental. My favorite Kankick album and one I listen to daily; I LOVE the drums on this and the whole thing just flows together perfectly. A little more out-there and psychedelic (for lack of a better word) than most instrumental rap albums, but I would put it right up there with the very best instrumentals ever. If you are going to get just one album from what I up here, I'd say make it this one or andsoitsaid.

More straight-up funk type off stuff than 'Kick has done before, but not too dissimilar from his other albums. "1974" and the Dudley Perkins track are particularly sick.
Kan takes the mic here more than in any of his other albums and despite what some would say he's got skill.

Most producers would take a career to put out something as good as Seeing Spirits, but Kankick puts out ANOTHER album, equally as good, in the SAME YEAR.

We save the best for last... Kankick and Madlib together, producing for the first album of Declaime (better known these days as the blunted out singer Dudley Perkins, who I will be featuring pretty soon). These are all very different than their typical instrumental cuts- almost everything here is over three minutes and they follow a slightly more conventional rap-song form than their more experimental stuff- but I would go as far to say this is better than the mighty Madvillainy, beatswise. Both guys are on the absolute top of their game here. DON'T SLEEP.
